Customer service -- yes, it's still out there, alive and well. Today, after no hint of a previous problem, my car wouldn't start. There I was, sitting in a parking lot.
After they were recommended to me, I gave Half Price Towing a call, told the man what the car's "symptoms" were, and he said it sounded like a dead battery, although it could be the alternator. He said he'd be there in about 20 minutes, but made it in no more than 10. He jumped the battery and got the car running. I didn't know whether to cry with relief or hug the man, but thankfully I did neither.
While I was getting into my car to leave the parking lot, the Half Price man left. While waiting for traffic to clear so I could pull onto the street, though, I noticed his truck a couple of vehicles behind me. My first thought was that he'd hung around to make sure my battery didn't die. Then I smacked myself upside the head because I remembered I live in California now, not the South, and people don't do things like that here. I drove on about a mile to Firestone, and when I got there, the Half Price truck was there to the side of the parking area! He really WAS wanting to make sure I made it. I'm positive that if I hadn't come along soon, he and his truck would have come looking for me. Instead, we waved at each other and he drove off, although I pictured him tipping a cowboy hat and riding off into the sunset.
I'm totally amazed. And thankful. There are still people in the business world who treat customers as human beings and treat them as though they'd like their repeat business.
