I have read all the reviews and feel I must throw my two cents in. In my opinion this is the best sushi in Kansas City. I have found the servers to be attentive and friendly. My friends and I normally make it in for the Monday night special, $1 per select pieces and $3.99 for select rolls. Everyone I have taken here loves the food. Best calamari anywhere hands down. For those who are not big sushi fans, I have heard the teriyaki chicken is wonderful. I would recommend this place to anyone who loves sushi.
This place goes down as not only the worst sushi I have ever eaten but I will agree with the other reviews about the service.
First my wife received a corked glass of merlot. We ordered some rolls and a few pieces of sushi. The spicy tuna rolls tasted more like they were made with canned tuna instead of fresh. Then I ordered a bento and what I thought I had ordered was different than what was served. Before touching this dish I told one of the servers that it was not what we though we had ordered. She replied that "it might not be to late to change it" but clearly her body language said, sorry this is what you ordered. Also the lettuce that the salad was made of was transparent. (So was the lettuce that the table behind us was served). I tried the tofu skin and california rolls and was not satisfied.
When our server returned I asked him if he could take the bento dish off our ticket and he said he would. Then I am assuming the Manager came back to our table and told me that she would take 10% off our bill for the bad salad but would not remove the bento since I made the mistake and ordered the wrong thing.
This place has no idea what customer service is and must be so busy that they are not concerned with repeat customers.
Good luck if you try it.
Since moving here, I've gotten so tired of the cheesy Japanese Grills (really, didn't these die in 1993) that just happen to serve sushi and the trendy fusion restaurants that will serve sushi next to BBQ pizza (cough, Kona Grill). Finally, I found Friends Sushi and Bento - an actual sushi restaurant. Imagine that! My boyfriend and I think this is the best sushi in town. The quality of the sushi gets 5 stars from me.
While the sushi here is great, the service isn't (hence my overall rating). In particular, there is one female server who is awful! Beware of the Asian female server with frizzy damaged hair (and terrible English)... she's a total mess - slow, unfriendly, and never checks to see how you're doing - you have to actually pursue her (for everything). What's worse is that she seems very competitive with the other servers over what tables she gets, so it always seems like we get her as our server. Sometimes the chefs and/or other servers notice how aggravated her customers are and will come over to take your sushi order card.
Considering the service, going to Friends has been more frustration than pleasure lately. Unless I'm really dying for sushi, I usually go across the street to Blue Koi instead.
