Excellent food and atmosphere. For a appetizer we had the calamari cooked to perfection because if you overcook calamari it takes like rubber. Entree the special Red Snapper the best Ive tried and the eggplant is good.Bon appette
I have eaten at this restaurant (and the adjoining Pacific Sushi Restaurant for at least 7 times and it has always been exceptional. The Italian food is top notch and so is the Sushi. I have know the Sushi chef (Eddie) for over 10 years when he was working at the AI Sushi and Sushi & Steak down in Spring Valley - and he is one of the most innovative and top preparers that I know. Our family eats in a lot of high end restaurants in NYC (Nobu, Masa, Sushi Yasuda, Il Mulino, Babbo etc) and Both of these restaurants can really come close in competing for food quality. It's great that you can order from both menus while at either restaurant. It's kind of strange to have sushi with Italian but I guarantee that you'll love both.
The space is quite small so you really have to make reservations - especially for the busy weekend traffic.
They don't have a liquor license so it's BYO (which I like because it's much cheaper this way!)
The prices are really quite reasonable and the service is excellent. It really has a homey feeling and either the owner (Angelo) or his daughter are always there greeting everyone and making sure everything is perfect. That's the way that everyone should run a restaurant. It's real important to have the owners interacting with their customers.
There are not enough good restaurants in lower orange cty so I'm really glad they are there!
During the summertime, Angelo's opened a sister restaurant - Pacific - immediately next door to itself. It is owned by the same people who own Angelo's and it shares the same kitchen as Angelo's.
Since the two restaurants share the same kitchen, you are able to select items from Angelo's menu while sitting in Pacific. Very nice touch.
Food - the food was exceptional. We arrived around 6:30 and we weren't really that hungry so we decided to split two dishes. We started off with the stuffed mushrooms off of Angelo's menu. If you have not had these, I highly recommend them. They were stuffed with sausage and bread crumbs and topped in pretty good red sauce.
For the main meal, we split the filet mignon salad on Pacific's menu. By far, one of the better steaks that I have had in a long time. The meat was tender enough that you could cut it with your fork. The dressing on the salad was a tart vinegrette that blended well with the steak.
We had two complaints.
1. The service was slow. At the time that we arrived, the restaurant was maybe half filled. By the time that we left, we were one of three couples left in the restaurant. Upon completing our meal, we waited 15 minutes to pay the check. Doesn't seem like a long time until you are ready to leave and you can not get the waitress' attention because she has her back to you while she is talking with people she knows.
2. The check. The check arrived and I signed off on it. Before handing it in, I decided to total the check in my head. Somehow, I came up with a $21 difference in the restaurant's favor. I went up to my waitress and asked her to total it; she came up with my total. She went to re-run the credit card and when she came back she said that the original price was as such because they had added a "sharing" fee. We were only charged what I had totaled, but it would have been nice to know that there was a "sharing" fee before we had ordered our meal. There was no mention on the menu or by the waitress that there was such a fee.
So, if you want exceptional food with somewhat slow service and you don't mind double checking your check before leaving, then Pacific is for you.
