We both ordered burgers and salads and they were excellent. The burgers come from grass fed beef and are about as good as I have ever eaten. The malt was a little too chocolatey for my wife, but I thought it was really good. Total for our bill was $17 including tax and tip. This is one of those gems that you find on rare occasions and we will be back. The restaurant is located 23 miles from downtown Hilo in Laupahoehoe. Turn left just before you get to the 25 mile marker onto Old Mamalahoa Hwy. If you miss the turn and see the restaurant on your left continue to Laupahoehoe Train Museum and turn left there. The restaurant is located on Old Mamalahoa Hwy sometimes refered to as Government Main Rd. It is worth a stop.
I took a wonderful drive from Hilo to Waipi'o Valley in June, 2007. On the drive back we stopped at several places,; antique stores, lapahoehoe train Museum, and the Back To the 50's Highway Diner. What a great place! Great 'local' feel, excellent view of ocean. The food was excellent....we ordered burgers and milkshakes. When I tasted the burger, I was amazed how good it tasted, so i asked the woman who was working, 'why is this beef so delicious'? She told me that the beef is all natural, free roaming, grass fed beef. No hormones or antibiotics. WOW! Like 2 million times better than the best beef availabe, including kobe, which i feel is tooo tender.
if you are in the area, you owe it to yourself to stop and have a burger...or two. chris, st. pete
a diamond in the rough!: My wife and I recently spent two weeks about a mile north of the FHF. What a find! Great food, really cool setting (50's memories), and a wonderful family brand of service. FHF is a must visit if you're anywhere close to Hilo.
