When reviewing a restaurant, what matters most? Is it the ethnicity of staff and ownership, or how full a restaurant is? I would argue, no. In my mind, the key factors are: quality of food, customer service, and ambiance.
Ten-Ya scores big for me in all three categories. The sushi is excellent - I would consider it 'big city quality'. In other words, you would get similar sushi from a high-end sushi restaurant in a large city.
The service has never been an issue for me - I have dined at Ten-Ya at least 6 times.
The ambiance is what you would expect in a classy Japanese restaurant: clean, calming surroundings with a modern japanese bent.
I feel that the residents, and visitors, of the Sandhills are extremely fortunate to have a sushi restaurant of Ten-Ya's caliber. I have spent time in Japan, as well as having spent time in a small midwestern town - translation, I have seen both ends of the sushi spectrum. Ten-Ya resides much closer to the Japan end of the spectrum, and for that, I am quite happy!
Very disappointing. Half full restaurant if that. Children were asleep at their tables. Our wait staff a very pleasant woman took our order and brought soup and appetizers but 45 minutes later no entrees. People weren't being served. They blamed it on being busy. Oh well, never got to try the food because I didn't want to pay high prices for nothing. It could be good but I'll never know.

LOL anyways, i've been to ten-ya and it is one of the best places to visit if you are in pinehurst.yes, the service is quite slow but the food is fine. so far the best japanese restaurant i've been would be the one in downtown red deer, alberta canada. the restaurant name is "sushi"...it is fantastic!!
