My wife and I were at Oasis recently and the experience was thoroughly unenjoyable. The grounds have been neglected for what appears to be at least a year. Some vines are overgrown with weeds, entire sections of vine appear to have been cut, the perimeter fencing is coming loose, and the tasting room reminds me more of a crab shack than a place you'd go to taste wine.
The wines were nothing at all special. Of the 7 listed, three of them were out of stock. The other four were not worth the tasting fee.
It's a shame, I've always heard that while the folks at Oasis were snobbish, they always had good wine. I don't know why they would let the property fall into such disrepair. It really is a shame.
If they ever give out awards in Virginia for pretentiousness, then Oasis will be right there competing for the top spot (though granted, Kluge will give them a run for their money).
The wines I've sampled here have been across the board mediocre with the chardonnays tasting bland and flabby (lacking acid I would assume) and the reds nearly undrinkable. However, what really sets Oasis above all others is the pricing on their sparkling wines. The Infinity is a hilarious $125 a bottle, while the Grand Rose is a mind boggling $300. Even the NV brut is an eye popping $68.75 a bottle.
It would be one thing if these wines were something extraordinairy, but nothing I've ever had here was any better then the NV brut or blanc de noir you can get for a fraction of the cost at Chandon.
To think that for the same or less money as the Oasis NV brut I can get a bottle of NV Bollinger, NV Roederer or NV Tattinger, it really does strain the imagination trying to figure out how Oasis manages to sell any of their sparklers. It really must be true that a sucker is born every minute.
This winery has improved since the first generation owners have taken control. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. By the way, in spite of the rumors, they are open. See oasiswines.net.
