Food is good, but nothing earth shattering, especially for the price.
The food is not bad, but not great- sweet and overpriced for the portions. you would think the meal would be a treat though, given the stylish decor (except for sandwiched tables close to each other like you would expect in NYC, so close you can hear your neighbor's stomach growl). Our expensive meal was spoiled at the last minute by a rude and stupid wait staff, that asked us if we could HURRY UP AND LEAVE because people were waiting (and we were not lingering!) The irony is that we were just about to sign our credit card slip, which she of course knew, and her request had a direct impact on what we left her for gratuity- talk about dumb. My family spent over 30 years in the restaurant business, and you just don't do that! Since our table was in the lap of our neighbors', they overhead and were shocked as well. Not too much of a surprise, though, since Westfield has become known in recent years for emanating an altogether snobbish me-first mentality, so Splash fits right in- all pretense and pomp, showy with no substance. (if you're looking for something friendlier and more authentic and reasonably priced, head down Central to Clark's Thai restaurant- better in every way and they are happy to have you.
Too sweet for my taste...: It's Thai for Americans. You'd expect that, given its location. And yet, we assumed it would be more authentic and of a higher quality. You'd also expect that, again, given its location (in Westfield, a tough town on restaurants). Decor and style are very nice; an open kitchen looks out over a nicely decorated and clean dining area. But spring rolls were doughy, sauces tasted bottle-based, and the curry had undercooked potatoes and avocados (?). That Thai set of spices, that undercurrent of adventure which adds a touch of zip and unexpected touches to Thai cuisine, was very latent. So, the food's not bad... but its not great.
However, the nice location and environment makes the food better, and for a thai restaurant in the middle of NJ, its not bad. I just have higher expectations, given the quality of Westfield's other restaurants.
