Good food and a really neat location on historic Main Street in Grapevine. Best place to go in Grapevine on a Friday or Saturday night
Had hear about Tolberts resurgence in the Dallas market but had been until after I read the recent Bon Appetit magazine article about how they are ranked one of the top 10 chili spots in the country. So I had to go check them out, and it was definitely well worth it. Tolbert' is located on the historic Main Street in Grapevine which has really come into its own. It definitely has the best Main Street of any of the suburbs of Dallas. McKinney's Main Street is OK but Grapevine's is definitely better.
Once you go in the restaurant you can feel the history. My understanding is that the dad of the family ran the Tolberts restaurants that used to be around Dallas including I believe one on Knox Henderson where the Chuy's is now. Regardless, when he passed away, the restaurants were closed and then the children have taken the old recipes and started them back up 5 or 10 years ago. I know their is a shop of Tolberts accessories on Main Street as well, but we didn't go in and I hear their chili is now for sale in Whole Foods.
The decor is warm and inviting, lots of wood and exposed brick and a neat bar area. The chili was amazing. It sounds like they have won a lot of the Texas chili competitions for years and years.
In general just a fun comfortable place that doesn't feel like you are in the midst of Dallas.
We have been to Tolberts a few times and always had a great experience. Good food, good service and an great ambiance.
Tolberts is not really close to where I live so we don't get out there all too often which is a shame because Main Street Grapevine is a really neat and unique area for the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. There are a few areas like Bishop Arts, Lakewood, and Main Street Grapevine that remind you that North Texas has more character than just miles of suburbs and pre-fab "town centers" that are made to try to feel old.
I have heard that an Eagles cover band, that I missed hearing at the Dallas Arboretum a couple months ago, is playing at Tolberts this Friday and hadn't been there in a while so I think we are going to check it out. I came on here to read some of the reviews. I was surprised by a couple of the negative ones but they are also pretty old and I did go to Tolberts when they reopened a few years ago and there were definitely some kinks, but all my more recent experiences have been great and I am hoping for a similarly good experience Friday.
A friend of mine went to hear his friend's band play a couple weeks ago and had a great time. I haven't been there to hear any of the live music before but my understanding is after the dinner crowd on the weekends they have live music which is fun.
I am excited about their jalapeno poppers, chicken fried steak and a cold beer.

I saw that Bon Appetit article. Good to see Tolberts get some national pub, they deserve it!
