As a Montessori pre-school teacher I observed the school and found the children happily at their work. The teachers had normalized the classroom well, as there were no children acting out and the noise level was at a minimum. It is a nurturing environment which allows each child to experience guided discovery. Medford is lucky to have Great Montessori!
The person who pulled their child out of the school because of the bathroom issue is spot on. I as a grandparent would be shocked if my children went to this school and learned of the bathroom policy there. Shouldn't this be something that ALL parents should be aware of upfront? We all have different values in life, we can't all have the same views but we should be given an option to choose for ourselves whether we agree or disagree with school policy and make an informed decision. The school did not give this option to this parent. Times are monetarily difficult right now and its sad to see the school is refusing to at least refund money owed. I am a little put off by some of the comments in response to concerned. Comments like get a job and trying to undermine concerns character is at the least biased even prejudiced. In a country that is moving forward to get past stereotyping these kind of comments are archaic. Good for you concerned for standing up for what you believe in! And thank you for the insight on the school!
I have known the teachers of Great Mystery Montessori Preschool for years. They are exceptionally kind. Having seen the way children interact with them it is hard to imagine better teachers. Devan absolutely lights up when talking to them.

It is unfortunate that this parent has an issue with what is a normal stage of development for children this age, it is common during group bathroom breaks for children to peek at each other, and I for one know that is it not a practice of this school to encourage the children to do so. It is a time in their development when they do start to notice the difference in genders along with many other areas of their lives. I just feel bad that such a good school is being seen this way simple because of a parentâs interpretation of a childâs statement asking Mommy why do boys stand up and pee. As you mentioned in your post that we are all in challenging times monetarily, I just want to say that I know for a fact that this parent did receive her full refund according to the schoolâs agreement; this is being fabricated just like the story of the teachers. It is sad to see such a good school have to go through this and it is also sad to see the parent going through so much that they need to make up stories to be believed.
This entire situation has been blown out of proportion. The focus of this school has and always is the childs best interest. Part of the growing experience is curiosity, which is normal and if there was someone peeking through the crack in the door, which does not make sense, since the toilet is behind and around the wall, the child would not see anything, except maybe a reflection in the mirror (the back of a boy standing up). There would be no frontal nudity visible, so the question of why do they stand up is not being asked in a sexual way. If there is a normal curiousity, it should be addressed and dismissed. The more that the parent dwells on the situation, the more curious the child may become. Be happy that you have a normal curious child and move on to more important issues!
The school has refunded the tuition owed and the concerned parent signed receipt stating so. No funds were held and the transaction followed the guidelines of the school agreement prior to enrollment.
