I grew up in Louisville, though I have't lived there for many years. I have spent those years living in one of the best food areas of the country, if not the world: the San Francisco Bay Area. On a recent trip back to Louisville to visit family, this self-professed food snob had to get off her high horse about food in her hometown and accept there was food in Louisville which was as good or better than what I can get out here. I knew Louisville had gotten much better food-wise in the years since I'd left: mexican restaurants had waiters who actually spoke spanish, I could go out to dinner and find something other than fettucini alfredo (the only option for vegetarians back in my day), even a couple of real Indian restaurants had opened, but every time someone said, "hey, there's this great little mediterrean place..." my nose would go up in the air and I'd lobby for something else. One night I was starving and tried to find the little Cajun place on Frankfort Av. to get some to-go food. I couldn't find it, but I kept passing Shiraz (my friend had just showed me a menu and was yet another person to reccommend it) I was desperate, so I stopped. I am so glad I did. It was extraordinary. I could drink the hot sauce! I wish there was one out here in the Bay Area, so I could feed the craving I have had for more food from Shiraz since the night I had it. If the exceptional food was not enough, the people who work there are some of the nicest people I've come across in the food industry in a long time. They go way beyond customer service and make you feel like family. They are happy to answer any questions about their food; they are truly passionate about what they do. I also love the shirts they wear as their "uniforms". They sould sell the t-shirts and bottle that hot sauce. Seriously, it is some of the best food I have had in a long time...I, Little Miss Food Snob, who lives in the land of organic, free-range everything, who eats out all the time, including a sushi place which has their fish flown in fresh from Japan each morning, with more cultural influences and cuisines than one could ever count. If this review gets back to anyone at the Shiraz on Frankfort Ave., thank you (especially to the man at the counter who I guess is the owner)...for your kindness, for your food and for teaching me once and for all, there is some wonderful food to be had in Louisville...even for a California food-snob.

Bear with me. Ya know how you get the carving for a White Castle? This place is worse. Most places I think the Hummus is well just OK. Once you have the Hummus at Shiraz's it will ruin you for life and nothing eles will do. I get the craving every other day. If they open a store in Indiana I might just have to sell my kitchen. Oh yeah the rest of the menu is just as good. If you are looking for something to excite your taste buds this is it.

I was going to go to another restaurant but it was shut down and we were so lucky. We stopped by here on a whim and I am so glad that we did. The food is delicious, homemade, and original. The staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We started off with the hummus which is more than I could have asked for. It had tomatoes, olive oil, and olives and served with a wonderful flatbread. I bought tons of bread to be sure that I had enough! I had the Shiraz salad along with the hummus which was the perfect compliment. I would definitely get it again. We finished up with the Joojeh Kabobs which were chicken and was served with onions and flatbread. There was just the right amount of spiciness to the kabobs and I ate myself silly. I will definitely be going there again and I would recommend this to anybody. Make sure to tip!
