Was it a series of unfortunate events?
My family dined at Sushi Mambo last night.
We were set at a table and given the menus. Shortly thereafter the waitress came to offer us drinks. We ordered tea which was served promptly. We ordered our dinners. The miso soup arrived. A bit salty, but otherwise OK. After we had our soup we waited OVER 35 MINUTES for our food to arrive. The waitress never came around to check on us, fill our water or tea, or explain the delay. We managed to catch the attention of the bus boy and asked him to refill our tea. He came back with a tea pot and refilled our cups with COLD tea. When we finally managed to get our waitress attention, she begrudgingly replaced our tea. Still no apology for the cold tea or delay of food. Finally, the food for 3 of us came. My daughter, son and myself were having sushi, and my husband was having Tempura. The Tempura arrived 15 minutes after the sushi. Again, no explanation. The sushi was acceptable, but not great. The maki was falling apart. The Tempura was greasy and the rice was soggy. When my husband requested additional rice he was charged $2.50 ( this has never happened to us in any Japanese restaurant). The third glass of tea was black (Lipton style) instead of green tea. When we finally got our check, it was scribbled all over and added incorrectly. No more Mambo for us, thanks!
Awesome sushi! Much less traditional than the other place in town; it strikes me as more "california style" with catchy names for various plates, and the same psuedo-hipster feel that Downtown Napa tries for. It's less pretentious than most other Napa eateries, and stays very genuine with most everything. The staff are great, and the atmosphere is fun (very popular, come early!). Try everything, it is all good! I've tried a number of things and not been disappointed yet.
Word of caution, it can sometimes take longer than you'd expect to get orders that involve being heated (particularly on busy nights). It is ALWAYS worth the wait however.
