What a great find! My wife and I happened upon "sawa" as the locals call it on a weekend trip. I had a wonderful pizza and my wife thouroughly enjoyed a cheese fondue. He enjoyed a abbey ale(forgot the name) and She enjoyed a gnarly red wine. We will definately be back to try the other beers and wines-they have quite a variety of both. Hope to retire in the Alex area, this may have sealed the deal.
I imagine that this restaurant would be considered a good addition to Alexandria in that it isn't your usual midwestern supper club-ish place. However, my experience at Sixth Avenue Wine and Ale this weekend was very unimpressive. First of all the restaurant was nearly empty when we arrived, with only 2 other tables occupied with guests that were all nearly done with their meals, however it was a long time before our server even approached us. She actually walked past our table twice without even saying a word. I overheard her being very friendly with one of the other tables, but did not give us the same attention. She did finally take our order, but made no apologies for the wait. We were not in any hurry, so it really wasn't a big problem, it is just nice when the server recognizes your wait. We each ordered the only 2 beers on the menu that were anything beyond major local (MN) macrobrews and major domestics. The 22 ounce Flat Earth Pale Ale was an outrageous $11. I have ordered this same beer in other places and have paid close to half the cost. I am not a wine drinker, so I did not pay attention to the wine list, however for a restaurant that includes "Ale" in their name, they left much to be desired in their beer selection and prices!
We each ordered one small plate, as we were not hungry enough to eat much more. I ordered the Brie en Croute, which was a tiny bit of Brie encased in a puff pastry with carmelized apples and onions. It was good, but not overly impressive. My husband had the crab and shrimp cakes over asparagus with wasabi. His meal was very well prepared and was very tasty. We waited a bit too long for such simple dishes and again without any explaination from the waitress. She never once came over to ask how things were or if we wanted more beer. I had to request to have my water glass refilled and when we were finished with our meals, she never even asked if we wanted dessert, she just simply brought us the check. Even though I had planned on ordering a dessert, I decided not to since she obviously just wanted us to go anyway. Very strange.
I can imagine that if I lived in Alexandria, I would welcome a place like this, but as an out-of-towner, I was sorely disappointed. Small wine bar-type places usually offer high quality drinks, food and service. It is sad to see an otherwise nice place that is happy with offering low quality service and a sparse ale menu.
What an outstanding addition to Alexandria. An upscale hang out for adults to go to. This is not a place for the masses but for those who want to relax and just enjoy a quiet drink and a nibble or two. This is the nonparty zone hangout. How very refreshing for the group of people who just want a great place to hangout and enjoy a quiet moment. It is a wow spot that is just what it is, GREAT.
