With all the hype about this place, I finally made the long awaited visit to the coveted BBQ joint in the lovely Federal Hill. However, the lovely stopped there. I was quite dissapointed with food.
I got a selection of their "Damn Good" sides and a Brisket sandwich, and was left with just "Damn"... what a waste of money. Whoever is cooking needs to lighten up on the salt. The Creamed Spinach with all the salt and serrano chile made it inedible. The potatoe salad was bland as was the coleslaw, and the Brisket at best was average. The Texas Pudding was in no way compared or resembled how it really tastes in Texas. The Serrano/or chile pepper used overpowered the entire side that it made it hard to enjoy the rest of the flavors.
Finally the Fried Green Tomatoes...hmmmm...what to say. Southerners would be ashamed. The cornmeal crust was very salty, and the fact that the crust was burnt, was even more unappetizing.
I love the idea of using all the different flavor combinations and the selections of foods offered was great. But seriously, the balance of the seasonings will not mesh well or improve the flavor of the food if it isn't seasoned properly! Isn't that food 411?
This place definitely committed several of the ultimate culinary mistakes of any BBQ pit master, resturanteur or chef. Over seasoning, under seasoning, and burnt food!
Maybe I visited on a bad day, maybe this place actually isn't that bad. But today was the day that I visited and realized I will not go back or recommend RUB. The owner or chef really needs to taste their food before they send it out, as this was a disgrace to Texas and all Southerner's from St.Louis, to Memphis, to Atlanta! So much for recommending to Triple D on the Food Network! Rub definitely "rubbed" me...the wrong way!
What I found there was remotely edible. The ribs were so dry and poor in quality that I felt as if I'd come across a hole in the wall strip club with a bonus buffet. Their food is something you might walk past and joke about delving into. Save your money and go grab some fast food or a bag of chips. The food here is so awful that is a sin they are still "legally" open. Sorry RUB, I've been there twice now, and it's quite sad, get some serious help, or close.
Cute spot...tucked away in Federal Hill, plentiful parking, just around the bend from The Harbor. The food was VERY tastey, the service was great, reasonanble pricing, drinks were creative (lots to choose from). I would definately go back. I will share with a few friends, maybe make it a little secret chill spot.
PS I had the Smoked Turkey, Sweet Potato Fries, Corn Pudding (LOVED IT ALL)
