This restaurant has changed for the worse. I have noticed it going downhill in my last few visits. La Pinata used to be tops on my list as a restaurant with authentic, high-quality food, great service and charming ambience. Lately, we noticed that all the staff (except one waiter) have been replaced, the quality of the food has declined and the service is terrible. I asked one waiter what happened to the staff and was told they had all quite; but upon additional inquiries it was disclosed that the restaurant is under new management and fired the veteran staff upon taking ownership. I was really disheartened to hear this because the previous staff members were excellent employees, hardworking, friendly and cheerful. It is clear that the new employees are not being trained properly. They leave customers for long periods, get orders wrong and do not seem to be customer-driven. It is not their fault, but the fault of management.
We have been patronizing La Pinata every week for several years, but the party is over. I am sad to see this restaurant fall apart. I am also angry that good employees were let go by the new owner. Just another sign of how employees are viewed by businesses as less than people, just mere labor resources. As for today's meal, they got our order wrong. One of the other new waiters spent the entire time visiting with friends at another table. This is not the way to run a business and definitely not the way to keep customers. What a tragic end to a once-great establishment. We won't be going back.
This place was good up until recently but my most recent meal there was one of the worst Mexican dinners I've ever had. A group of six of us--four adults and two kids--went for dinner on a Tuesday night. It wasn't busy at all but the service was very slow and it took over half an hour for food to come out after ordering. Then only three meals came out and none of them were what the kids had ordered--kid's food should come out first! When my son's food finally came out it was an enchilada meal, not a taco meal. I mentioned this to the server, who first lied and tried to tell me the enchilada was a taco (I'm not that stupid) then he brought out the menu and tried to argue that that's what I had ordered (even after I had said my kid would just eat it anyways because he was starving). Don't lie and argue with me if you want a tip or any return business.
I had ordered the Carne Asada tacos meal; however, I received tacos and not the beans and rice that come with the meal. The meat was greasy and rubbery with very little flavor.
Don't know what happened. This used to be a reliable and fairly authentic Mexican restaurant. A better bet in Kalamazoo would probably be Los Amigos or one of the smaller local places on Portage Rd or Burdick. Even Big Burrito is better if you can stand the small size and bar crowd.
Best Mexican I've ever had! The white cheese in the Enchilada's is amazing! Service is somewhat slow, but I'm willing to deal with that for the awesome food!
