We decided to try Tres Amigos because we had seen the parking lot filled with cars on numerous occasions, usually a good indicator that the restaurant has good food. Oh how wrong we were. First came chips and a salsa made from tomato and large leaves of cilantro--there didn't appear to be any other seasoning involved. We ordered 2 beers, which came sans glasses. I asked for a glass and I know it was clean because it was warm, straight from the dishwasher. I then ordered (with much difficulty as the so-so duo playing on the other side of the bar was amplified so as to make conversation next to impossible) the enchiladas and my partner ordered the tacos--usually a safe bet in any Mexican restaurant. My enchiladas came and were bland and filled with a type of cheese similar to what my 5 year old refers to as "squeezy cheese", i.e. straight from the can. The sauce was completely bland and the whole dish was incredibly cloying, even when washed down with my (now warm) beer. My partner had better luck with the chicken and pork taco and did enjoy those. However, the shredded beef taco that he asked for was nothing less than amazing--in a bad sense--imagine your grandma's leftover pot roast and gravy thrown into a taco. There are a few redeeming qualities--if you're after drinks, the margaritas did look inviting, and for smokers, Michigan still allows smoking in bars, and there is a nonsmoking room as well. However, for the money ($17 and some change for 2 beers and the above-mentioned entrees), I would have enjoyed a better meal by going to Taco Bell and buying a 6-pack. I will definitely never eat at Tres Amigos again.
Great, and Cheap Too!: This place has pretty good, but cheap food! I like the authentic tamales (real corn husks). But, the cheese tastes kind of processed (normal at home, not suitable in a restaraunt). The other foods taste pretty good, and they have an extensive kid's menu. I think it's a great place to go when you don't want to spend a lot of money (2 adults, 1 hungry teenager (me), and 1 kid was $28), and don't feel like you're dressed up enough to go to a fancy restaruant, this is the place to go!
