It was refreshing to finally see inside the doghouse. You have really hit the mark dead on. Great food good prices and a nice place to dine. I really liked the menu on the overhead chaulkboard. Nice sixties touch. ENJOY YOUR TRIP THERE I DID!!
I recently moved to the farmland of Indiana and am so glad I found The Doghouse. The food is great, reminds me of the dogs in Chicago.
The staff is friendly, but it can be busy in there over the lunch hour!
I highly recommend this place for a good hotdog or beef sandwich!
WOW!
I am new here from Chicago and I was missing the food I grew up with. Devon's Doghouse filled the bill. It feels and tastes like the places I went to back home. The owner, Chris, and his wife are really friendly and always make a visit a lot of fun.
They serve real Chicago hot dogs, burgers, beef and my favorite, REAL GYROS, not the fake stuff you find at the grocery store. They also serve really good ice cream and their shakes are to die for. I can get in and out really fast except right at lunch time. My average bill is only about $5.50 and that includes fries and a drink.
Make sure to go on Wednesdays because Chicago style dogs are only $1.50 all day. The line can be long but the wait is worth it.
Chris can seem a little rough but he is really just having a good time with you. If he barks at you or what he ask's you sounds silly, return it in kind and see what happens. A lot of times, you will wind up with a free scoop of ice cream just for playing along with him. I think he is out to have as much fun as he can all the time and the busier he is, the sillier he gets! I have even heard him singing what I think is Latin while he cooks at the grill (he's got a good voice).
Last thing. Devon's Doghouse has the ONLY FREE wireless hot spot in town. The speed is pretty good and if you need power, he doesn't mind it if you take a table along the wall and plug in. Just cozy up and feel right at home (just remember to buy something, it is only polite but he doesn't make a fuss).

In the interest of accuracy, I must point out the Rensselaer Library also has a free public hot spot, though we won't allow you to eat or provide you with interesting tv to watch while you use it. The Doghouse is one of the coolest places to eat in NW Indiana, and it's really great to have it here at home. Chris is a truly generous host, and his secret recipe for a summer cooler is a life saver.
