There's what I call "standard pizza" which comes from the major delivery chains (Papa John's, Domino's, Little Caesar's, Pizza Inn, Pizza Hut, etc.) That's the bottom tier of the pizza world. Then there's what I call "mall pizza" which is not necessarily sold at malls. Mall pizza tends to be bigger & greasier and thus slightly more enjoyable to me than standard pizza. In Athens we have Sbarro out at the mall and Peppino's over on Milledge. I can't tell the slices apart. Then there's "highfalutin pizza." This type of pizza usually costs more. But what you get for the additional expense is merely a larger-than-average wad of crust piled with the same toppings found at standard pizza joints. Highfalutin pizza joints also usually offer "specialty items" featuring uncommon combinations of toppings. Such highfalutin items come with highfalutin names like "Gourmet Campidoglio con el Fico Brogiotto Nero" and smell of rotting garlic. Mellow Mushroom is Athens' premier highfalutin pizza joint. They have 666 million beers to help you choke down their giant crust wads and not notice the exorbitant prices. Then there is REAL PIZZA. Paparonni's serves real pizza. It is consistently GREAT, no matter what toppings you choose, and the prices are very reasonable. The only drawback to Paparonni's is that if you don't live in Madison County you have to go all the way out there to get it. I also liked it better when it was simply called "Ron's Pizza." Maybe Ron's Pizza didn't have that marketable ring to it, but it was a real name aptly suited to real pizza. If you haven't tried Paparonni's, I think you're missing out on the best local pizza.
