I went to Mellie s this afternoon to update my look, and was so incredibly thrilled with the results. Kristin did both my cut and color, she got rid of all that brassy blonde color I ve been wearing for fifteen years and gave me beautiful soft high lights, a dark honey blonde that was much more flattering. The cut was perfect, she gave my style a whole new shape but left the length, just like I asked. The salon s owner, Mellie, is frequently there, always very helpful and incredibly knowledgeable about all things hair and beauty related. The prices were reasonable, the salon was impeccable, and every member of the staff, very welcoming and professional.
Made an appointment a few days before and the guy on the phone was very helpful and bent-over-backwards to accommododate my funky scheduling needs. We made it work.
I read that this salon won Best of Boston so I decided to give it a shot...always nervous to let a new colorist and stylist touch my hair, but I'd read about Katelyn and Mellie on their website, and they seemed experienced, well educated, and they seemed to have what I was looking for.
Katelyn delivered beyond my lofty expectations. My highlights are perfect. Yes, perfect. I'm a highlight addict, and in the past 10 years I've likely had 60-70 highlighting services. This is one of the best.
After my highlight service, the cut I got from Mellie is simply superior (one of the top 3 cuts I've ever had. I watched as she sectioned my hair and it was obvious she was competent and knew her stuff). A snip here and a snip there...I now look HOT!
This salon is in Milton, a small shop that's easy to miss if you are nor specifically looking for it. LOOK FOR IT!
You'd expect this type of service in a big salon in Boston, New York or LA. The prices here, while not by any means cheap (my cut + highlight was $220), are well worth it, and you get better service for 25% ish less than the big city salons.
There was a cute little dog there, her name was Gypsy, and she added a homey feel. She snuggled with me for a few minutes. So cute!
Check out this salon, a huge, very positive surprise for the suburbs.
I work in Quincy which is just a ten minute drive to Mellie, which makes me mighty lucky.
I'm 35, and I've abused my hair for a good 20 years. I've been dying it and cutting my own bangs and getting cheap haircuts. Why? I don't know...
And I have good hair--thick hair--that really requires the help of an able professional. A cheap haircut just looks like a cheap haircut with hair like mine. Simple as that.
So I sprung for a cut with Mellie. She's lovely and did amazing things. I'm so impressed. Half of the women in my office already go to her because she just simply knows her stuff. And her prices are reasonable (check the site--her level and the pricing is listed clearly) for the quality of the cut and the impeccable service at her salon. Honestly, it's only $25 more than I pay for a really BAD cut (and had to suffer with it for 8 weeks) in my neighborhood, so don't think this place is overly pricey.
For color, I go to Janine. She's great and did miraculous things with my badly self-dyed hair. Again the price for the level and quality of service is really fair.
Today I went in for a quick bang trim (free!) and when Mellie was busy, Jennifer helped me out. I'd never taken advantage of the bang trim before (opting instead to hack mine over the kitchen sink with a blunt scissor--smart), and it was surprisingly awesome. Jennifer took her time, did a really careful job, and I left with new bangs (and the ability to see again).
If you're like me, you might get intimidated by "celebrity" salons like Mellie--but don't worry. The staff is classy, pretty and professional for sure, but they're also EXCEEDINGLY friendly, welcoming, and helpful.
Update: Seriously, just make an appointment with Mellie and/or Janine. I went in for a cut and color today. When I was done I walked across the square to Starbucks and two different people stopped me on the street to tell me that my haircut was great. And I swear I wasn't walking around pointing to my freshly-shorn locks. For serious, Mellie and Janine are magic.
