Two stars because one is the minimum that I can give them and another star because the waitress asked our table for an opinion. At least they are trying. My review is mostly about dinner, so if you are into the bar and appetizers I suspect you will have a different take.
The best description I could have for this place is amateur hour in Olympia. This restaurant would not last a day in Seattle, food was just mystifying. Halibut encrusted, entombed is more like it, in walnuts and a thick paste of mushroom demi-glace? Looked like a chocolate nut ice cream bar. Lets play hide the protein. Why anyone would do this to a piece of halibut is beyond me.
I ordered the lamb shank, nothing special, nothing memorable except that it was slightly larger than a chicken leg. Rice was plopped on the plate from a bowl, everyone had the same sweet, heavy sticky rice, and no one finished a fraction of it. Vegetables were garnish, like little pieces of paper, choked a few down to fill my stomach after my bite of lamb.
The place should just serve appetizers and wine and stay out of the dinner service. As a bar the place could be a 3 or 4 star, wine selection was pretty good for Olympia and the three glass sampler is a great idea. Our appetizer was good, a cheese and fruit plate, albeit a bit over priced. Two people at our table had been to this place before and said the cheese platter had been too big in the past, so I guess the trimmed it down but left the price the same.
Service was a bit slow but the waitress was pleasant and helpful. The view of capital lack is nice and overall the place has a local, comfortable atmosphere. A great place to have a drink with friends at the end of the day. Just don't stay for dinner.......
The food's fine, and they have the best bar tender in town.
