My husband and I have been customers of the Doose Cafe in Marengo, Iowa since it opened. We are more than pleased with the menu and find the place quaint & historic. The staff is very friendly and treat you like family. The restrooms are clean and kept well supplied. Sometimes we eat at the Doose Cafe three or four times a week. The coffee and ice tea are kept fresh at all times. We feel that our day is not complete without stopping at the Doose Cafe for at least a refreshment.
Loyal customers from Blairstown.
We believe that the negative report was made by a disgruntled ex-employee and should be removed from this site.
I was so surprise to see such a negative review of such a nice place. Then I saw the name on the review and I am lead to believe it was a disgruntled ex employee. We have been eating there 3-4 times a week since the 1st day he opened. It is an old building but is fixed up and decorated in its orignal decore from the old hotel. Copper ceiling, Victornian wallpapered bathrooms He even has a display case on the wall with a dress for the 30's era. FDR's picture hangs over the old lobby door. The lobby is used as a dining room and meeting room for the Kiwanis ever Wed. His menu has plenty of healthy choices even for my husband and I who are diabetics. It is very clean and a great atmosphere. On Thurs. Nights they have bluegrass and country Jam sessions in the dinging room. The staff is always friendly and helpful. The owner is very particular how things are done and served so I think that is why some of the not so particular past workers aren't there anymore. I would recommend it to anyone. His new Ice Cream bar is great. Even sugar free items. Homebaked desserts.
I really like this place. I've eaten here a few times when visiting this part of the state. The food is good and the staff is friendly.

How quickly any negative review is dismissed. And particularly the personal remarks about not-so-particular employees must be the source for negativism. I wonder how many positive reviewers are relatives of the owner. Having seen first-hand how the food, at the time of my employment, was prepared, and with 30 years in the food service industry, I'm not offended by assumptions from customers about negative reviews. The building IS canted at the back end, readily observable from the street. Not negative. Fact. Whether some of the policies of food storage have changed, I no longer know nor care. As an employee, I discouraged my family from eating there. Call it the backstage view not afforded regular customers. Personal remarks as to the nature of the 'not-so-particular' employee should be removed, as reviewing the -reviewers- is just small-time gossiping, where accusation is granted the veracity of truth by innuendo. I remarked as my opinion entitles me to, as to food quality, cleanliness and the building's dilapidated condition. Perhaps a full building tour would settle the matter. Or an inspection. I'll be happy to discuss the matter with any Health Dept. officials. I wonder, does that make me disgruntled, or simply conscientious?
