My friends have been raving about this place, so we gave it a try. What a pleasant surprise! We started off with the antipasto platter, which was delicious and a meal by itself. I ordered the special, linguini with shellfish. It was delicious, and the portion was huge. The staff is friendly and efficient. Corkage is only $8.00/bottle. I can't wait to go back and sample more of their dishes.
My best friend is Italian (Northbeach SF) so I grew up eating A LOT of Italian food and I have to say - honestly, this was the WORST Italian Food I've ever had. The bread they served for appetizer was stale and weird, the dipping sauce was even more strange, and the seafood linguine was horrible - dry, overcooked shrimp and old salmon and a strange tasting sauce on it too - definitely NOT the normal decent Italian fair you can find most anywhere in N. CA. And when I told the waiter (Dan) that I really didn't care for it, he just said "Well, that's too bad.." and walked away! I couldn't believe it! I finally went to the register to pay and when I complained, the lady manager (owner?) said they'd comp the whole meal - which was nice (and the only reason I gave it 2 stars). My advice, the people are nice, location is good - but they need to get some fresh food, REAL Italian recipes, a new cook - and a new waiter! All in all, it seems like a place where people can take their little kids - and maybe the kids will eat it! For me, I'll stick with one of the other Italian places on Laurel - and take my kid to Speederia over this!
I was very surprised when I first went to Giuliana's. This restaurant is in the same location as Ciao Amore. Ciao Amore went out of business and this new restaurant took its place.
Giuliana's has excellent traditional Italian dishes. I liked everything that I had there - bread and garlic, calamari, etc... Very satisfied and surprisingly good.
San Carlos isn't a place known for fine dining but Giuliana's is a stand out and worthy of competing with fine establishments up and down the peninsula.
A definite re-visit for me.
