being a traveler and absolute bbq fanatic, i can say smoque is hands down some of the best bbq i have had anywhere. bbq is definitely not universal, so to each their own. as for me, a trip into the city is not complete without a stop at smoque bbq. st. louis ribs are moist and meaty, sauce is superb. brisket is great, beans are out of this world. im getting hungry writing this review! rule of thumb for the soggy bread review, bread tends to suck the moisture out of stuff such as MEAT!
As a frequent watcher of The Food Networks ,Diners Drive-ins and Dives, I had remembered Guy Fietti had given Smoque BBQ such rave reviews, so away we went.
Last Sunday I was down for some honest to goodness good BBQ, so the wife and I had decided with another close couple to take a ride and see how Smoke ranks up for ourselves.
When we arrived there was no line to get in, cool, a plus for us. We were greeted by a friendly staff and they explained their choices from the menu that they offer.
After hearing the mouth watering choices we place our order and took the great smelling foods home with us. Upon arrival to our home we hurriedly took our plates and loaded on the Q. Starving, I snuck a spoon of their beans, HOLY SH!T, what the hell did I just eat? These were ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING! It was brown sugar water (super super, sweet) with pieces of brisket and beans. I continued on to the 1/2 pulled pork, 1/2 brisket sandwiches thinking these cant be as bad. WRONG, the bread was more moist than the meats in both sandwiches. The sand in Iraq had more moisture than the brisket, and the pulled pork had more fat chunks in it I thought I was eating a contestant from The Biggest Looser! Let me add the sauce they put on the side, to make it more palatable. Im sorry did I say sauce, try watered down katsup w/ apple cider vinegar and a dash of liquid smoke. Their mac-n-cheese was no better, it was the equivelent your grammer school lunchrooms, with 3lbs of parmesan cheese, made it taste like mac-n-sand.
If we had eaten it there I would definately have asked for a refund. All we have to show for that disgusting visit is, for my family, a $28.00 case of the shits.
Guy must have had an off day, but hey crap happens. Espically if you eat there.
I was there last week and I must say I was soooo disapointed. The brisket was dry and the beans were way too sweet. I have had my share of Q from all over in Memphis and Chicago and many other places. This was not Barbaque. The sauce was soo thin and tasted like it was vinegar and liquid smoke. The mac and cheese had so much parm cheese in it that it was cakey. I was not impressed.
