For a fee of over $2500, services received by our family from American Senior Financial consisted of them completing 2 simple durable power of attorney forms and coming to a screening visit in our home wherein we provided the needed documentation for evaluation for Nursing Home Medicaid (to facilitate an easy application by the counselors). If you have all the documentation needed, you've done the hardest part of the work. Completing a Nursing Home Medicaid application form takes about 30 minutes. They submitted the application to Florida Medicaid, but didn't follow through with anything else when my family member passed away in the middle of the process. The supporting documentation we gave to the counselors was not received by Florida Medicaid, despite the death occurred after the deadline, and no follow up related to post death actions needed to transfer finances to my surviving family member were done. We were told clearly NO REFUNDS were available when our family member passed away before completion of the Medicaid application process. Anyone in need of assistance with a Medicaid application should contact the appropriate Medicaid office in their county. The application can be done free of charge. Your county Medicaid counselors are also able to help evaluate finances. Hospital based financial counselors can also assist with explaining the requirements free of charge. If you receive advice to seek a private counselor for a Medicaid application, make every effort to call your county PRIOR to doing so, or visit your county Medicaid office. If you lack transportation, its worth investing a much smaller amount of money in a taxicab. The American Senior Financial counselors were unavailable after my family member passed away. They returned only one of several calls after the death, and told my remaining family member they would assist with getting a few post death financial arrangements made when we complained about being charged a huge fee for such limited service. They did not follow through and have never called again. During the initial application, they promised to contact all the organizations necessary to get the financial issues resolved and those organizations had no record of contact. My family member ended up executing all the post death estate arrangements. For services rendered, a $2500-3500 fee is exhorbitant. These folks promise estate planning services, but from all indications, they didn't complete any planning for our estate. All that we received was a Medicaid application which you can get done for free, a financial evaluation for Medicaid (part of the standard Medicaid application done for free in your county office) and 2 power of attorney forms, which you can get completed for much less by contacting an attorney, or accessing on line services such as Legal Zoom. Although it was convenient to have the counselors come to the home, had we known the service would be so limited, we'd have invested in a cab. These folks are very congenial and professional, but Buyer Beware. If you need financial help, call or visit your county Florida Medicaid office and if the county office advises you need professional help, they can help you find an attorney, or you can find your own attorney. If a nursing home or hospital refers you to a private service, DO NOT immediately contact them. You can get what you need without spending your hard earned money. You'll spend MUCH LESS than $2500-3500 for a simple consult with a lawyer.
