this place is horrible. the bagles taste good when you don't know they've been dropped on the floor and placed back on the shelf as if nothing had happened. i was employed by this jerk and he treated us like people that were less than him. he was stingy with his money and did not want to lose money off of the dropped bagles or pastries. due to the difficult work force here in oregon, most employees just bite their tongue but now that i'm no longer employed, i want to let everyone that comes by this review to never visit this bagel bakery again. (I saw him pick up dropped bagels 5 times during my 2 week employment-- and i was only working 20hrs/wk!!!)
I go to the one on NW lovejoy and 23rd. These are the best bagels ever, seriously, try the pumpkin one!
Wish I could only knock half a star off but I can't. These bagels are delicious and a nearly perfect rendition of the classic NYC boiled bagel. The shmears are delicious, in particular the jalapeno. The only faults I have with them are that the density of the bagel is a little light. Maybe it's a water thing? They dont have quite the tooth feel of the bagels I got used to in NY. My only other complaint is the slowness of the service. This may be due to a crappy toaster oven or being understaffed but it looked to me last time I went like there were three people back there shuffling their feet while 8 or 9 stood around waiting for their food. I know, I know, it's Portland and nobody is in a hurry and everyone is nice but efficient and indifferent service would add that final NYC touch I crave as bad as the bagels.
