We have been eating at Dwight Pizza ever since it opened a few years ago and they just keep getting better. Dwight Pizza is one of those additions to a community that was a long time coming. I don't know how many times my wife and I have talked about out of all of Dwight's many restaurants, there aren't many good ones, until Dwight Pizza showed up. Our only choices in pizza stores were quite drab. One could get a very good pizza in Dwight if all one enjoyed was taco pizzas at a Casey's. Everything else was made by folks who really didn't know the pizza business, which means there was no consistency or no flavor. Success was a hit or miss situation. Not so with Dwight Pizza. John and his crew make very good pizza and seem to do this consistently. Their sandwiches are also killer creations not expected to be found this far from the big city. My favorites are currently the portabella sandwich and the taco pizza. Ingredients and freshness are everything for these two local offerings. John doesn't just scrape refried beans from a can to your crust and call it a taco pizza. He mixes some fresh sweetness in the way of special sauce in with the already awesome refried beans. Do not order these to go or delivered. Eat them right in the store for optimum effect. One thing that good pizza can't do, regardless of who makes it, is maintain its freshness for more than 15-20 minutes. This is why so many pizzas are ho hum. Geo's in Dwight creates a pizza to maintain freshness for up to 30-40 minutes. How do they do this? It tastes the same whether 5 minutes out or 35 minutes out because it lacks flavor to begin with. There's almost nothing to protect. Dwight Pizza uses very fresh ingredients that start with loads of flavor. Italian beef, cheese, Italian sausage, pineapples; it's all fresh. Dwight is a small town so a delivered pizza or sandwich can last long enough to get to most addresses and still be very good; not as good as if eaten in the store, but still better (in my opinion) than most other delivered foods. And, don't be surprised if John himself shows up at the door with your dinner. It happens.
Stu Marks has been a local food critic for over ten years and regularly eats in many of the restaurants of Livingston, Grundy, Will and Ford counties.
Oct 2009. Dwight Pizza Update.
Ya gott'a try the Ultimate with peppers. John has added some fresh peppers to his already great ultimate pizza. Because of the extra toppings on the Ultimate, the crust is a little thicker.
Have you tried the Portabella Sandwich yet! It is THE BEST SANDWICH in 150 miles. Forget about all of the Americanized Italian sandwich shops in Chicago. Sandwiches are American food. Try John's Portabella Sandwich, but only if you enjoy flavor. Like his Italian Beef Sandwich, the 'Bella is all flavor in every bite.
I was coming into Dwight and i noticed a pizza sign. So I decided to try, man did i make the right choice. Their Italian Beef, with cheese is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The staff was very courteous, and the restaurant had a warm welcoming to it. I will recommend this place to all of my friends and family, a MUST place to dine at. Will be back soon, thank you so much Tim R.
