What a superb culinary experience and flawless service at the beautiful decorated restaurant Natalie's at the Camden Harbour Inn. Our evening started with an amuse of an infused butter squash shooter with a splash of extra virgen olive oil and Julienne of cilantro. The warm tones and perfect balance made us happy and set the tone for the evening. Fresh bread and sea salt butter were served followed by a beautiful plated appetizer. Never have I been more pleased with a house made gnocchi with wild mushrooms and lemon nage. The gnocchi was prepared to perfection and the combination of the earthy mushroom tones and fresh lemon gave this dish a unique harmonic pallet of flavors only found in the best restaurants. What better way to clear the taste buds than with a smooth sorbet of cranberry and lime, apparently always part of Natalieâs service when ordering an appetizer and main course. And what a main course we got; lamb âtree waysâ with an eggplant Bellini, cooked to perfection the jus had so many layers only created by a rare talent and again a perfect combination of flavors and texture. To finish a wonderful night I had chosen the brioche is warm spiced wine with house made clementine ice cream. The warm feeling of Christmas, winter or German spiced was my immidiate association after my first bite. Original, classic and oh so good.... If I had one point of criticism it would be the espresso, perhaps it would be advisable to check the coffee machine, but served with a perfect, complimenatry chocolate tasting, a mediocre espresso is quickly forgiven The service was extremely knowledgeable, both food and wines, very professional and pleasantly attentive. The restaurant's décor is bold, luxurious and vibrant, something you would expect to find in the big city. The elegant glassware by Spiegelau (Natalie's serves 'tap' water in $30.00 glassware!) and Riedel and chinaware by 10 Strawberry street and Rosenthal are appropiate for such an establishment. Natalie's is cleary not cutting corners nor costs a rare delight for midcoast Maine. The Executive Chef likes to meet his guests at the end of the evening (make a reservation after 7.30pm!) for feedback and we were told that he was invited to prepare a Christmas menu at the prestigious James Beard House in New York (only the best chefs in the US are invited to cook at the Beard House). Based on the raving reviews by the national press, accolades and multiple awards (including lobster chef of the year); I have to conclude that I am not the only one embracing this talented chef and excellent eatery as probably one of the top new restaurants in a quickly changing culinary landscape.
Including a three course dinner, a bottle of wine ($55) excluding taxes and gratuity we paid $172.00 for two, a bargain for so much excellence.
During my recent visit to Camden, Maine I had dinner at at the Camden Harbour Inn. The waiter could not explain a couple of the dishes I asked about. The menu could use more local resources. Good size portions, but the flavor was hidden in a heavy sauce. I do not think the food was particularly good and both my husband and I were disappointed in our overall experience. I would recommend it for a glass of wine and maybe overnight stay. From what I could see of the lobby the owners had done a nice job with the decor and the location could not be beat.
Natalie's, without a doubt, has the best food in Maine. We have eaten at the best restaurants all over the world and this place can compete with any of them. The chef creates dishes that stimulate every part of the tongue at once. The seats are comfortable, the lighting is perfect, and the overall decor welcoming. Don't miss this restaurant !
