Tucked away in a small neighborhood at 509 Palo Alto road in a former two bedroom house, is some of the best creole comfort food in San Antonio!! Bernard's Creole Kitchen opened in 2007 and that same year, recieved the Blue Plate Award, and Critic's Choice award for best neighborhood restaurant. Talk about large portions and savory old fashioned red beans and rice. Ice tea is forbidden, instead they will serve you Swamp Water, which is quite similiar, but with a tropical twist. All the food is excellent. I tried the crawfish etouffee. It was mouth watering. To keep it fresh, new items are featured everyday. Entrees come with your choice of two sides, for example, okra, green beans, jumbalaya or gumbo are offered. The cornbread is superior. The small restaurant is simple and seats about 25 people at a time. Owner and cook, Bernard will welcome you, take your order and cook the food himself. The Cajun meatballs were delicious. I tried the gator balls, (gator meat with dijon mustard for dipping) as an appetizer. The whole experience was delightful. Simple, huge portions, and friendly service. Discounts for law enforcement and children's menu available. Prices about $8.00, worth it. Restaurant hours are Tuesday -Thursday, 11-7, and Friday 11-9.
Bernard has some exciting news.
"We will feature a new menu starting in November. Classic favorites and new recipes. Come by, we stand by our products. It is a taste of New Orleans in San Antonio!" he said.

Bernard was scheduled to caterer a wedding of mine, he showed up 4 hours late, then only brought 1/2 of the food that was paid for. It really was a mess. He did not bring help. He brought one lady who did not know what the heak she was doing. It took us 2 hours to feed our guest.THen 1/2 did not get feed to the fact there was not even close to enough foos. It was horrible and so embassing.
People said food was good and taste wonderful, did not make up for the fact that he messed up so bad at a wedding. He never apolgized for messing up the wedding evening. He was very rude. I dont not recommed this man for any event.
