UPDATE**** September 2009
Congratulations to Jaimie! Her simply delectable Pumpkin Bread won the Blue Ribbon for being #1 in variety loafs in the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center's annual Blue Ribbon County Fair this year! Stop by and ENJOY all the delectable offerings!
Thunderhead Perk is one of the most delightful coffee house/ meeting places imaginable. The coffee is superb! The best Organic Espresso ever... simply the best! The drinks whether hot or cold are delicious with a full bodied flavor. If you are looking for a heathy alternative to the typical Townsend fare, this is the place to be. The sandwiches are made on whole grain breads and/or wraps. Everything is fresh. Take your sandwich on a hike or enjoy it there. There are tables outside as well. You deserve to give yourself a treat. And, speaking of treats, delight your taste buds with a "Mookie", a cross between a muffin and cookie. It's melt in your mouth goodness! The ambience is perfect for the town and area. Hosts Jaimie and Michael welcome you and introduce you the most wonderful people. And, if you have any questions about hikes or the Smokies in general, Jaimie and Michael know all about the area and will offer suggestions if asked. Coast to coast, this is hands down more than the best coffee shop! It is an experience!
When I first moved to Townsend I was suffering withdrawal from the great cappucino I was accustomed to having every day in Nashville at popular local coffee hangouts Bongo Java and Fido. I am a true beanhead and it was surely culture shock!
Then Jaimie opened Thunderhead Perk a couple of years later....right here in Townsend, TN....at a little walk-up stand...and we were saved! The next year she moved into the little log cabin....a charming and unique gathering place for the locals and a real treat for visitors to the area. It has truly become the "Cheers!" for beanheads and visitors from all over the globe. They serve the best coffee within hundreds of miles.
Jaimie and Michael are true barristas...their technique and presentation are outstanding and the flavor and aroma of their freshly roasted and ground coffee beverages will just curl your toes! They also offer other drinks as well....organics, teas, smoothies, and some heavenly fruity concoctions that will freeze your brain, but only momentarily. Their food is as good as their beverages. They use the freshest ingredients and lots of organics in the various sandwiches (Jaimie's curried chicken salad is
always in demand) year round and in the fall and winter the aroma of her mouthwatering soups beckon you in from the cold weather for a nourishing and satisfying lunch. Just remember to leave room for one of Jaimie's stellar desserts.....homemade cakes and pies, cookies and trail bars......or have one of her always-in-demand scones so fresh you'll swear you're sitting on the banks of Loch Ness scanning the lake for signs of Nessie!
She also features works from local bees (talented bees produce great honey!), artists, photographers, and craftspeople which decorate the walls of "the Perk".
My husband and I are in Thunderhead Perk every day and have always been delighted with the beverages, the food, the friendship, and the conversation. Besides the locals, you are likely to meet travelers from all over the world, all bound together in their love of the coffee and the peaceful atmosphere of the "Quiet Side of the Smokies".
So "Y'all Come!"....for great coffee, food, and conversation!!
What a charming coffee shop located there in Townsend, TN. What a joy to stop in and relax a while in a comfortable rocking chair and have a cup of the best organic, shade grown coffee i've ever had. This coffee shop is very much representative of the "peaceful side of the smokies". The scone made by jaimie was just perfect. I couldn't resist getting a veggie sandwich to go for later. This is the kind of place you could spend hours in reading a book, the paper, or just chatting with Jaimie or other customers. What a charming experience. I look forward to my next trip back. Keep up the great work Jaimie!! You are definitely on the right track.
