Love it there! The food is always great. Sometimes the service is a little slow but knowing that you are about to have a great meal makes it worth the waite. Go with friends and take some wine with you to have a great night out. The gourmet pizza is also great and the pizza oven with the glass tile on it creates a great decor. Exceptionally friendly staff & owners!
This blend of evening Sicilian restaurant and daytime (not winter season) comfort food is a natural for the excellent Stockton location. Not only are the dishes carefully prepared, but served with friendly warmth. It was clear that atmosphere at Via Ponte can be family style for large parties, or intimate for two. On our first visit, the carefully chosen decor put us at ease, and lent interest. We ordered a specialty of the house, available only on request (quail), accompanied by wine from one of NJ's best wineshops next door. Desserts were really delicious.
After yet another extremely frustrating evening at Via Ponte, I feel compelled to write. While the wait staff tries, the restaurant has been VERY understaffed on the weekends and disorganization prevails. It was 10 minutes after sitting down before we were recognized and we had to end up getting menus ourselves after another 10 minutes when none were presented--and this has happened on other visits as well.
The salmon with lemon was well prepared, but fish was well past its prime--a problem that has occurred on other weekend visits. While the pizza is terrific and was the reason we went there--it was the second visit that it was arbitrarily not served as the staff was manning another event in town. Of further frustration--diners who arrived after us (who gave their order about 3 minutes before us) were served pizza. Either it should be on the menu or not. The Bronzino fish was good but small and not served with any vegetables and only a very small side of pasta and seemed wanting in terms of its $30 price tag.
On Sunday evenings, there is the promise of live music, which proved to be such an awful experience and was so distracting that it disturbed what was otherwise a very good meal.
After at least 8 visits to Via Ponte-though the food is good (particularly the pizza when you can order it) with invariably poor and unprofessional service, high prices on entrees that rarely live up to expectation, it will unfortunately be the last visit there.
