My family and I (from LA) recently visited Orange and had the opportunity to eat at San Marcos. We were delighted to find really well-prepared Mexican food and meet the lovely people who prepared it. The chicken mole, chile rellenos & chicken soup were all delicious and the flan was the best we'd ever eaten. All dishes were prepared with fresh ingredients and seemed "light" (for Mexican food). The owner (Alfonso) was our waiter. His wife, Gabriela, and son, Mario are the cooks. They were all lovely. Food and service excellent. Highly recommend San Marcos.
The most delicious, authentic Mexican food that I have ever had. San Marcos is truly an amazing restaurant because it is finally introducing the real way Mexican food is supposed to taste. The service is very timely and welcoming. The environment makes you feel like you are part of the family. It is run by a family who take a lot of pride in their service and their customers, which you can see very clearly when you walk into the doors of San Marcos. It is very clean and has beautiful decoration inside. The food is amazing and when you top it off with an original margarita or beer, it makes the experience that much better.
Best Mexican in Orange is at San Marcos, bar none. Authentic, delicious, and affordable, their fresh salsa is devine, and homemade mole sauces are to die for. Cheese dip comes in a huge bowl, enough to provide adequate dipping for a family of five.
San Marcos is the most under appreciated dining in the community. This is not due to the quality of the food. No, unfortunately it is because of it. The folks in Orange, by and large, are simply missing out, because good Mexican food comes to this area so rarely. The standards for Mexican fare in Orange, Greene, and Albemarle are so poor that the few places providing genuine deliciousness are misunderstood by the unschooled taste bud.
Highly recommended for the atmosphere and service, too. The place is run by nice, well educated folks. It shows in their high food standards and attention to every detail. Fabulous is not kind enough to describe San Marcos, no kidding. I hope they stick around.

Mikey, I second your opinion. We've been eating at San Marcos almost since the day they opened and have been welcomed and well-fed each time. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be enough local demand for food of this quality. I too hope they are able to stay in business.
I agree. Having grown up in Southern California and venturing over the boarder on many occasions, I have experienced Authentic Mexican Food at every level, and while there is a place for the good ol'greasy, cheesey enchilada, San Marcos is the example of what fine Mexican cuisine is capable of being. Fresh ingredients, a classy atmosphere (minus the stuffiness) and gracious staff...the owner is the sweetest you can't beat it! It may be a little more, but it's worth it! Plus, they are now adding live music from time to time, which just makes an evening at San Marcos the best of times. Give it try. Five Stars all the way!
