I thought the service and atmosphere was excellent... habachi was entertaining and one of my friends ordered sushi and enjoyed it. I thought the food was great. Def going back.

I totally disagree!!! The sushi was fresh and the presentation was impeccable! The prices were inline with other Japanese restaurants I have been to. The service was excellent as well. I recommend this restaurant. Saturday all rolls were half pice. I compared the full price on the rolls to what I pay at my grocery store and Sakura Gardens were much better! Go...try!

If you ignore the plastic cabinet in the entry,it is designer quality; very slick with contasted metal, stone and the relaxing sound of a water wheel. We skipped the Habachi and ate at the dining tables which were surrounding the busy, noisy bar area.
When the food came, then it all went downhill.
They brought out the tepid soup and then let us know we had a choice of salad. The seaweed salad at $10 was moslty mayonnaise, which was all you could taste. The teriyaki shrimp on the sizzling pan was cold on a cold plate and the second attempt was only up to lukewarm.
Given that it was an $19 entree, dinner for 2 was not worth it. I would go for drinks and only drinks, to enjoy the bar and skip the food.

I so disagree! It's a restaurant. If it wasn't busy, I probably wouldn't go there! A Japanese restaurant should be experienced at the Hibachi for hot food or at a table for sushi. If you are going to a Japanese Steak House for anything other than the sushi or Hibachi, the local chinese take out is the place for you! If this was truly a date night, you should have picked something a little more intimate. Japanese steakhouses are known for their high energy atmosphere around the Hibachi. Again I say, if the bar is the only thing that interested you, I'm sure you can find a local watering hole in the Hamden area.
