We totally agree with Mike H's assessment of the Heron's Nest and our host Rich! We arrived on Friday afternoon, and quickly got over to Pindar and Bedell for some wine tasting, about a 5-minute drive. On Saturday, we headed out to Orient Point for bike riding, and got back in time to take a swim at Nassau Point, using the parking permit provided by Rich. Breakfasts were delicious and accompanied by good conversation. We especially enjoyed experiencing the opening ceremony of the Olympics on the big screen in the basement theater. The Heron's Nest is a fabulous place to stay: we expect to make a return visit and we highly recommend it!

Never having stayed at a B&B before, I was more than a little reluctant when my wife suggested it to start our vacation in Cape Cod. We were looking for a place on the East End of Long Island, close to the Orient Point ferry. I figured, though, that if I went to one with her I would never have to do it again. Bad attitude to begin with. My wife found the Blue Herons Nest in Cutchogue and booked the night. That's an advantage, right there, because most places were looking for at least two nights. She told me that it was brand new. How bad could it be? My imagination was working, but she didn't want to hear it. When we pulled up it was just what I expected....someone's house. That was the last thing I was right about. We were greeted at the door by our host, Rich Frerking. The term "gentleman" is not used often these days, with good reason. However, Rich is the definition of the word. We talked a little and then he signed us in and showed us to our room. I was pleasantly surprised that the room was very large, with a king-sized bed, refrigerator, sitting area and (very important) private bath. Most importantly is that the place was immaculate. After we got settled, we went downstairs and asked Rich if he had any recommendations for a local restaurant for dinner. We took his suggestion and the dinner was excellent. Getting back about 10:30, we found Rich still awake and watching television. We talked with him for about 45 minutes. Just a nice guy. In the morning, about 8:45, after a good night's sleep on a very comfortable bed, we went downstairs and were met in the dining room by Rich. He had the table set. At each place was a piece of melon. Rich had made eggs, sausage, and bacon and had them warming on the buffet. He offered us orange juice and we made toast and helped ourselves to coffee and the food. We had a good breakfast, loaded the car and said good-bye to our host. O.K., I was wrong about the B&B experience, because it turned out to be a great way to start our vacation. I might stay at another B&B sometime, but they will have a very tough act to follow. I would stay at the Blue Herons Nest again, anytime.
