This review is for the Hawaii Family Dental Centers, not for Cally Adams specfically. A little over a year ago when we moved to the Big Island of Hawaii, I contacted the Hawaii Family Dental Centers in Waikoloa (which have at least two dentists and a part-time orthodontist) about orthodontic and dental care for myself and family. I got an appointment several weeks later and talked to the orthodontist. He told me he could not help me because he was being reassigned and that a new orthodontist was replacing him. What was odd was that he told me that I should not go to the new orthodontist, and he recommended that I go to an orthodontist that was a competitor to the Hawaii Family Dental Center.
I took his advice and went to the recommended orthodontist. When he asked me who my dentist was, I said he was as the Hawaii Family Dental Center. This orthodontists warned me about going there and told me to find another dentist, as they had a bad reputation. It ended up that the recommended orthodontist couldn’t help me and he recommended that I go to another orthodontist, which I did. He also asked me who my dentist was, and I told him. He also went on about how bad their service was and gave me a name of a different dentist to try.
This was disheartening news, as my dental plan was an HMO and Hawaii Family Dental Care Center was our family’s only choice, assuming we wanted to have insurance pay for part of our dental care.
Not having much choice, we scheduled dental appointments for myself, by wife, and my daughter. It took about 8 weeks to get an appointment, and this was for the dentist only. After this visit, for the three of us, we had to wait another 4 weeks until we could schedule a cleaning. I went to one of the dentists of the clinic, and my wife and daughter went to the other.
We were told that my daughter needed three fillings, and we scheduled an appointment for her. According to our dental insurance, the costs for the three fillings was to be only $45. We were shocked when after the fillings were done that our bill was for nearly $400, not $45. The clinic’s explanation was that my daughter’s fillings was some kind of exception and was not covered by our insurance. But, we found out later we had a choice about the type of filling used, and that if we had made one decision, the cost was $45, but if another type of filling was used, then the insurance would not cover her. The dentist recommended that we use the expensive filling, and we accepted her advice because she said that it was better, but she did not inform us that it was not covered by insurance. We complained that they should have explained the differences in price, but the dentist said it wasn’t her problem.
With all the advice we had gotten about how bad Hawaii Family Dental Centers was, plus this bad experience, I worked with my company to have our dental insurance changed, which we did.
We went to our new dentist and my daughter’s mouth was examined, and the new dentist told us that one of the new filling that was put in by the dentist at the Hawaii Family Dental Centers was done incorrectly, and that the dentist had not properly removed all of the decay before adding the filling. This meant that we had to pay for having the same cavity filled again, because the dentist at the Hawaii Family Dental Centers had done such a poor job. In fact, we were told we were the fifth case that this dentist had seen of a filling done by a dentist at the Hawaii Family Dental Centers where a cavity did not have the decay removed properly, and the filling had to be redone.
As you can see from my experience, I highly don’t recommend the Hawaii Family Dental Centers.
