Upon recommendation of a friend we stopped by this little turn of the century smokehouse and pizzeria to check it out. Turns out that it's now one of our 'Best Places In Michigan' finds yet.
Although we could have called our pizza order in, we decided to make our order on the spot and check this place out while the pizza was being made. The minute you enter the business your senses are bombarded with the smells of the fresh meats from the smokehouse and the pizza's cooking in the ovens. From that outset one could tell that Sal's place was an amazing mix of old school tradition and quality.
The beautifully restored original tin wall fascias and ceiling remain from when this was a small cheese house & meat market owned by several generations the Berger family. The staff also told me that the meat recipes are that of the original Berger family, prepared to their exacting high standards. And from a sample of their Mettwurst sausage, I can say that they are doing that family recipe proud. I can hardly wait to go back and try several other of their specially prepared meats. While perusing the store I noted that Sal's provided pretty much every thing that goes along with their food. From a good selection of beer, wine and soda pop, right down to chips and BBQ supplies.
Within 15 minutes the very polite staff had our large 'meats' pizza ready to go. Although we could eat in Sal's vintage dining room, we opted to give the staff a break from us and take it home.
What an astounding pizza! From the liberal amounts of fresh meats to the rich cheese it was definitely a far cut above the chain stores pizza's. The toppings actually covered the entire top of the pizza, unlike the chain store pizzas that you have to hunt for a piece of meat amongst a sea of oily processed cheese. That brings me to another point, the paper plates we were eating off weren't soaked with oil & grease when we were done! Every last bite (that we could over stuff ourselves with) was a clean bite of fresh pizza. We were both left full and very satisfied with only half the pizza eaten, a rare feat by any means. As we most all do, the remaining pieces would eventually become the next days quick breakfast.
A quick re-heat in the microwave the next morning provided me with a pizza that still had great taste. Unlike the chain store pizzas, it hadn't suffered the ill effects of soaking in oil and grease under a layer of processed cheese that looks like a melted Barbie doll.
All & all, we would have to give Sal's a big thumbs up in every aspect. Keep up the god work guys, we will definitely be back.
sal's makes some of the best sandwiches and pizzas. my favorite is the pizza calzone or the turkey sandwich. stop in and try one!
