The Pop-a-top Cafe....or is it a bar?....seems to have a great reputation among people who don't get out much.
The waitress seated us in an area a little more casual that the rest of the cafe......next to the ladies restroom. The smoky ambience helps mask the fact that the restrooms stink and need obvious repair. The limited menu selection has typical cafe fare but there are no offerings of fish.. just cow and chicken. Food quality is obviously not of top priority but then it is a bar. Or is it a cafe? We started with onion rings which were ok and the serving size was large. There was a wait for the meal but eventually the entrees came, as I feared they would. I selected the evening special, enchiladas, rice and beans. The rice was ok, beans were from a can and I mean directly from a can. The enchiladas were cheesy.....and greasy, greasy, greasy.....but there was a good sized portion. Given the location of the Pop-a-top Barfe and its clientele you would think that this regional cuisine would have fared better. My companion selected the grilled chicken salad. The bird was definitely grilled, so much so that hardly any trace of moisture remained. The iceberg lettuce was a soap opera of the limp and the listless.
The waitress was efficient, thankfully not over friendly but she did seem to get upset when we stopped at a couple of beers each. It was a week night and I do realize she's unconcerned about a customer making it home without incident. She still got a 20% tip. So have another beer.
The venue had live music that evening which was a positive.... at least the primary attraction wasn't small wildlife wandering across the table.
My family and I LOVE Pop a top ............. Great food , great service ... Great food for the value ... Super size portions ... Average prices ............ We will continue to frequent this restaurant..........
