I have been looking for a good BBQ place in the area for a long time. There are others around, but they are not quite up to the standards I have for my BBQ. I know that some of other places are older, well-established, and well loved, and all for good reasons.
However, you will not want to miss a trip to this little jewel of a place, Walker's BBQ Smoke Pit. Their motto is "Best in the West" and I certainly agree with that! This is by far the best BBQ place I've been to.
It is not fancy, just a very casual place, but the food is INCREDIBLE! My absolute favorite is the pulled pork dinner, which comes with two sides (their BBQ beans are delish, the collards are to die for, and the mac & cheese is creamy, silky, and decadent). Hubby likes the pulled pork sandwich special which comes with one side, and he always gets either the beans or the macaroni salad. I can't convince him to try anything else; he's hooked on those pulled-pork sandwiches, and as southerner, he tells me they are among the best he's ever had.
I have been a little more adventurous, and have tried the rib tips (juicy, succulent, and tender);the smoked chicken (subtle, smoky, delicious and lean); the sliced turkey (tender, smoky, and heavenly); and the chopped beef (which was a recommendation from one of the owners, and let me tell you, I will listen to anything he says from now on, because that was the best beef I ever had!).
Of course, my favorite is the pulled pork. You have a choice of mild or hot BBQ sauce (note: HOT means HOT here, so if you are not into the flamin' experience of hot sauce, ask for the mild with a small side of the hot to mix it up a bit). The pork is smoked until it's succulent, juicy, charred on the outside, and infused with the most amazing flavor. It is then chopped (not pulled) into chunks and served with the BBQ sauce. It is absolutely divine! The amazing thing is that it is lean too, so you know you are not consuming a lot of fat.
I still have other things to try here, like the pork ribs, beef brisket (which a friend told me is excellent), the turkey legs, hot links, and any of their desserts: Peach Cobbler, Sweet Potato Pie, or assorted cakes.
I believe this is a family-owned business, and they take their business seriously. They provide excellent service, always with a smile, good customer relations, and you can tell they are endeavoring to make this the best darn BBQ place ever. I sincerely think they will succeed, because with the quality of the food, great portion sizes, excellent customer service, they cannot possibly fail.
Walker's also offers catering, party-packs, and daily specials. I haven't tried, but I am sure with sufficient notice that they would do up anything on a special request for you. They are that flexible, and amendable to their customer's needs.
The only drawback to the place is that is located in this funky little strip mall across from the Lakewood Country Club, and the stores don't face out onto the street, but parking and access to the stores is from the rear. You have to be careful during lunch, because of the amount of cars going in and out of this smallish, strip mall, but it is well worth the unfriendly layout of the strip mall. Go on the off hours, pick up some to go or dine in and watch their large-screen live, and enjoy the ambiance of a down-home, country BBQ place, with wonderful people.
I can't wait until my next trip to Walkers; I already know what I will order and am salivating as I write this!
Let me know what you think....

If you have a craving for BBQ then this is a good place to go. However, I find that their prices are a bit high for the amount of food that you get. The last couple of times we have eaten here we have been pretty disappointed in the quality of the meat.
