Small town atmosphere, big city chef. My wife and I are always surprized with this restaurant. It continues to grow in size and business in the slowest part of town. A true testament to the food and service.
Intrigued by the sign out front that read, "From pinto beans and cornbread to filet mignon," I had been hoping to visit this restaurant for months. Finally, on a steamy summer day right after a bit of rain, my husband, my son, and I all stopped in at Walker Family Restaurant for a try-out.
Upshot? We will be back. Soon!
Dear husband had already had lunch, so he ordered only the creme brulée with berries. After much agonizing and changing my mind, I finally ordered the bow-tie pasta with braised tomato and herb cream sauce and vegetables, and I asked for an order of grilled chicken to top the dish. My son ordered the Western burger, a third-of-a-pound Angus beef hamburger topped with barbecue sauce, cheese, and fixings on a gorgeous Kaiser roll with a heaping helping of fresh-cut french fries.
We spent the rest of the afternoon arguing over whose meal was best. And that's a great argument to have!
My pasta was just sublime. I was surprised by how many vegetables were packed into the dish -- fresh, sautéed squash, zucchini, broccoli, and cauliflower, not to mention sweet, carmelized onions. The braised tomato and herb cream sauce was just perfectly seasoned. And the chicken, while just a bit dry, was deliciously crunchy with carbonized striped from the grill. Delicious! I couldn't eat half of it, so I brought the other half home.
My son also loved his hamburger. Granted, it's hard to mess up a burger, but that Kaiser roll is just a miracle of modern baking. The barbecue sauce was not too sweet, not too hot, but juuuuuust right. And the fries were clearly crusted with either Kosher salt or big-grain sea salt. (I say Kosher; dear husband says sea salt.) It was just a classic burger plate, mouthwatering and perfectly cooked on the charcoal grill out back.
Dear husband's creme brulée with berries -- well, it was creme brulée with fresh strawberries! Go ahead and let your imagination run wild! We all loved it, and now that I'm home, I wish I could have more!
The service was just wonderful; not too attentive, not too neglectful. I asked our waitress for her recommendations on what to order, and she was not bereft of opinions. (I like it when they have a favorite to talk about!) I didn't end up taking her advice, but that wasn't because she didn't have great advice. I just felt like pasta at the time.
Trying to pick just one dish was agony, truly, and I cannot wait to go back so I can order something different. I must try the barbecue because any restaurant with a homey-looking, rickety smoker in the back parking lot is a restaurant that obviously takes it barbecue seriously and might have already stolen my heart.
I highly heartily recommend the Walker Family Restaurant if you're in the vicinity of Sweetwater. And save room for dessert! Because they have cobblers, pies, and something called Apple Caramel Bread Pudding, too!
