First trip to eat there today.. had the chicken salad sandwich plate with potato salad and iced tea (later coffee).
EXCELLENT: the food is FRESHLY prepared, and the chicken salad was the best commercially-prepared I've ever had in ANY restaurant. There was a tomato slice on the thick dark bread, and surprisingly, delightful touch to chicken salad. Potato salad was light on the binder and vinegar, also appeared freshly prepared, you could actually distinguish all the flavors of the ingredients, unlike our traditional Texas potato salad that is thick with mustard, sour cream and clops like a blob (hey, I've had some good potato salad, but the one today was DIFFERENT, and very, very good). Iced tea was freshly-brewed, and good; the coffee at this place is EXCELLENT!!! Rich, dark, full-bodied, no bitterness at all... the aroma is what led me to order a cup for my "desert". Reasonably priced, compared with my standard places: Subway, Taco Bell, Sonic, et al.
Different and recommended. Wonderfully casual and artistic (not arty, there's a difference) and well-done decor and environment. Well worth finding... and dining at.
I'll be back. I often eat downtown when I eat out because it's close to work and I like it down there (no pun)... Village Cafe is a downtown treasure, and I'll be telling folks about it (and likely offering to take my co-workers there).
