First the good: Great location and friendly service. Everything is made fresh so if you are expecting speed you are out of luck. This place is roomy and clean as well. Then the not so good: The food is freshly made but , just like the bare decor, is a little bland, no dazzling recipes here. It has a home-made feel to it with its soft fried potatoes and warm corn chips but may be not a home with a particularly amazing chef that would grant someone to say "Oh, you should open a restaurant." I had the milanesa steak with a very run-of-the-mill unbreaded crust, the salsa was chunky but crisp and the rice and beans could use some extra kick. The quesadilla and fish tacos were decent. Nothing to write home about or make an event out of it.
The advantage of this place is that there is not much around to compete except a couple of sandwich shops an it is inexpensive. For a nice dinner out, try somewhere with more personality.
Wonderful food, superb service - great atmosphere. I've been there 3 times and have recommended Lunas to friends and family. Everyone agrees that this is a great restaurant! You will not be disappointed!
I have lived in San Gabriel for 51 years and have seen some of my favorites mexican restaurants leave like Panchitos and Aztecas. Well finally a great new restaurant called Lunas. I have been their several times and I have no one favorite dish because they are all very good. The chips and salsa are made fresh and if you are patient you can get some hot ones. They have a full bar and I enjoy the margaritas alot. I also feel very comfortable and safe sitting at the bar. The desserts are great to. I am happy they are here and I hope for a long time.
