I'm 11 days post surgery and have 20/15 vision from the day after the procedure. Here is how I made my decision on who to have perform my surgery: Which Doctor? - I visited 2 practices, Dr Pham's and one other very established one in OC. The choice to work with Dr Pham was a pretty easy one. - Dr Pham took time at every visit to walk through each step of the process with me, from the simple preliminary eye exam and the tests to determine my candidacy all the way to the procedure. He answered every question in detail, and remembered details of our conversations from visit to visit. The other practice had a team of optometrists and technicians that conducted the candidacy tests, and I only met with the surgeon for about 10 minutes out of 90. While that speaks to the size/success of the practice, it also made me feel a bit like a commodity. - Dr Pham breaks out the process of determining your candidacy into at least two separate appointments. I am not sure if this is necessary medically, but it gave me some time to think about the procedure and to come up with questions as opposed to being rushed through. The other practice offers "same day" procedures, and while I'm not sure whether or not that's safe to do, I appreciated the more relaxed/patient approach vs being pushed into an appointment. What's it like? - The procedure itself was really smooth. Dr Pham has the most advanced Intralase machine in the country in San Diego, and so I chose to have my surgery at that location. The surgery itself maybe took under 10 minutes total time, and maybe 30 seconds or so per eye of actual procedure. There was zero pain during the surgery. My advice here is to make sure you go straight home afterwards and go to sleep. The trip back to Orange County from San Diego was pretty brutal, kind of like what it might be like after a face plant at the beach - but after 7-8 hours of sleep I woke up that evening feeling pretty good. I had some halo/starburst stuff going on for about 3-5 days after, but it's faded away completely now. Bottom line - if you are looking at different doctors with great credentials and solid experience, you may want to think about going with the smaller practice over the big one...even if it's a little pricier. My take is that a smaller practice will be more attentive to you personally...they have to be since bad news travels faster than good. Dr Pham, his business manager and front office staff have been awesome to work with. My 2 and 4 year old kids even know who he is.
