It simply did not work out.
Today was my first appointment with them, and I go in for a cleaning during my lunch hour. I had a noon appointment, arrive early to fill out my paper work, and am called inside right at noon. Punctuality is great, in my book.
The dental assistant takes my X-ray, then escorts me to the room. The first thing that rubs me wrong is when she tells me she is going to take my picture for my file. Did I sign up for that, or authorize that in some way? Why isn't there an "opt-in"? While this might be general practice in offices these days, I personally don't think it's cool to just tell someone you're going to take a picture of them. I have to consent.
More time passes, and soon it's 12:25 and I still haven't seen the dentist. I asked the passing dental assistant where the dentist is. She casually replies that she is with another patient. I tell her "I'm on my lunch break; when will the dentist be available?" She says she'll check, and returns in a few moments telling me "it'll be another five or ten minutes."
I say, "I made my appointment for noon, right?" She says, "Yes, but you're not the only patient we're seeing right now. And we only have one dentist, so you have to be patient."
I ask, "You only have one dentist? Then why did you schedule me for noon?" She says, "We schedule more than one patient for our time slots, in case someone doesn't show up."
I ask, "Isn't that called overbooking?" She says, "We don't schedule the day around you. If you didn't show up, we would lose that business, as well as that of the other patients we didn't schedule."
Hmmmmmmm.
So, to make sure I understand correctly (assuming the definition of "appointment" is that we agree to a pre-arranged time to meet each other), Gentle Dental overbooked ON PURPOSE with one dentist on staff at noon on a mf Wednesday in the off chance that MAYBE PERHAPS a patient or two won't keep their appointment.
Decisions, desicions. I stared at her. I couldn't believe she'd just said that my time means nothing. Ahhhh, NOW it makes sense why they have a TV in each examining room blasting inane daytime talk shows: it's to keep you occupied so you don't realize that they plan to waste as much of your effing time as they can reasonably get away with! Got it!
The overbooking thing ticks me off, but not as much as her attitude. I decide not to get my cleaning done there, and leave, returning to my car. I re-enter Gentle Dental a few moments later to make sure I wasn't going to be charged for anything, to find the dental assistant huddled with the front desk clerk, deep in gossip about me. What a strange patient I am! So kind of them to reassure me that they wouldn't charge me a thing. I'll be damned if they try that.
And you know, being honest, I DID try not to judge a book by its cover, but the bars on the outer building and the general run-down-ness of the facade and grounds, plus the fact that they have no air conditioning "today" just was a huge turn-off and I basically should've followed my instinct and never entered the building.
The "overbooking on purpose" thing killed it for me.
