I'm planning to build a rain barrel, so I'm looking for some used 55 gallon barrels. I know there are some listings on Craigslist, but those seem to be in Napa or Santa Cruz. Would prefer something more local.
I'm wondering if you have any suggestions on restaurants or companies in the area that may have some to give away for free or cheap.
Thanks,
There's a guy in Berkeley who sells them for $5. Look on Craigslist. I think this is the listing: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/grd/1105404849.html
I'm no expert, but I hear you can show up at the dump and get old water heaters that are retired or have sprung a leak, you just patch the leak (or not, it might be a slow leak) and boom -- free barrel for rain water.
I know that Wegman's Nursery on Woodside Rd. in RWC sells used wine barrel halves for $49 and has used 20 gallon planter for $6. I would also suggest calling some of the local wineries in the SJ Yellow Pages (there are more than a dozen) and asking them what they charge for their used wine barrels.

After posting this, I just noticed that some one previously asked a similar question about 55 gallon barrels. But I don't want one that is $100. $0 to $10 is what I'm looking for!
