I just have one question - why on earth on you even considering moving to Toledo?? I'd give anything to get out of this god-forsaken town.

They call Toledo little Detroit for good reasons. I have watch this city decay, and become infected with disrespectful youth.
There are some safe and clean areas left. But why do you think we have such a high rate of people moving out of this city?

I have lived in toledo all my life. Unfortunately, There is bad things going on in all neighborhoods, however, I live in the laskey, secor, clover area and while I know things are out there, I can safely walk down my street at 12midnight and feel safe. Surely anything can happen but my neighborhood is quiet, low traffic, and you just get that sence of security. Hope this helps.

Toledo is so far from what it used to be just 5 years ago. It really started going down hill about 10 years ago. We've had terrible leadership in this town for over 15 years, thus the town has fallen apart. Lack of jobs is a big issue, since industry is moving out and going under. Those who get educated here leave, because there aren't any jobs here that fit their degree. The cost of living is not bad, but you get paid squat too. A lot of people live here but work elsewhere - for that very reason. Better pay elsewhere but the cost of living is lower here. I would never recommend Toledo - never. I'm only staying here because my kids are happy in their schools - course we live in Springfield Township which is just a step away from Sylvania. At the moment, I can't find work because things are so bad here. I can't even find a part time job, so I don't know how you plan to manage here. Good Luck.

Toledo is not a lot different than most cities its' size. The biggest problem in Toledo is trying to find a decent job. The Unions have run most good companies out of Toledo. Toledo used to be one of the best manufacturing cities in Ohio. Those companies that relocated to get away from the unions have moved to the southern states. That left some of the automotive plants and their suppliers in the area. Now the automotive industry is running at about 40% capacity. It is pretty hard to be successful when you employ 250,000 active workers and pay out money to 750,000.

When the unemployment rate is high, so is the crime in those areas. If you were to get on line and look at the "Toledo Blade" you will see a crime section. This shows the types of crimes and their locations in the Toledo area. This should be very helpful in trying to find a safe location.
There are several very nice small communities within 50 miles of Toledo that would be much safer and

Toledo is a great place to live. It has a lot of safe places that you can walk around in. Do you have children? Than schools are important. Do you attend a Church? In my opinion that is the most important your faith in God, and His leading. How friendly are you? How much do you want to spend? Ottawa Hills, Sylvania, Oregon, Point place Bedford Michigan right across the line. All very good places. many of Toledo areas are great and safe, come and see before you buy. Im on disability so I don't work. I'll be selling my property here and settling a lawsuit (I got hit by a bus while riding my bicycle!! Wasn't really torn up that much, but couldn't move or do anything for almost two months. Ouch)

so, i will be paying cash and its just me and my two little dogs. i don't need a giant house, though they are tempting, just something around 1200 sf and in good condition.

Im sorry to hear about the job situation. I am on disability and have a modest, yet steady and permanent income from that. Otherwise, I wouldn't consider such a place as Toledo and all the other cities just like it.

No kids, no husband, just two 13# dogs and myself. My needs are minimal. As long as there's a Starbucks in town (I used to live in the Northwest, but can;t afford to move back home, so I go to Starbucks to "sort of feel at home again")

Keep on with it.....what are the good areas and bad areas of Toledo and surrounding areas. I kind of would like to be downtown in a house with a small yard, an old bungalow or something, where I could just walk down the block for breakfast or Starbucks. Is downtown Toledo a people-friendly place? Im from Portland, OR, and downtown is wonderful. Denver---well, if I was a Bronco nut, college-aged, jock it might be fun. My dachsund, well, she's kind of spacy. She was abused before I got her and she is very old. So, Im giving her safety, good food, lots of love, and a permanent place for the rest of her life. Most outlying areas of Toledo are safe, up and down Central Ave. is great because you are close to most areas. The further away from downtown the better. If depends on your income and what you can afford, if you are buying. If you are renting there are plenty of apartments off Central Ave. that are nice. Will you be going to college? If so again Central and Secor is a good place to start, it is close to UT(University of Toledo). There are plenty of good choices. 43615 is not Ottawa Hills. It's Springfield Township where I live. Not unless this zip code goes all the way to Ottawa Hils. It might run up to it, but most of this zip code is Springfield Township. I would highly recommend Springfield Township, and not just because I live here. It's good people who support their schools in a big way, and the housing is affordable yet nice. There is a range of income here, which also gives a nice feel to the area. Springfield Township goes from working class to upper middle class and is a nice mix of people.

Hi Frank,

Been down and out as I got in a car accident and totalled my car and am sore and bruised. Too bad it was my fault....I rear ended someone. Can't believe it.....Im always so careful. Looked down one second to turn volume down on radio and blammo, car in front of me stopped that same instant. I tried to stop, but didn't have enough time/space between cars. Im grateful I didn't hurt the passengers, though they were running around saying "Whiplash", though refused any medical attention. They looked like druggies to me. I got a ticket for Careless Driving and have court on Oct 28th. No doubt there will be a hefty fine. I got another car already. Its quite nice. Honda Accord Special Edition.

Had some bad news about my condo for sale. It seems like the prices are going down. Its a tiny one bedroom. Totally remodelled. My former realtor set price at $44,500, but I got a comp price of $29,000 from a realtor's office.......course that's with them not seeing the place. Its pristine and immaculate. I may just go ahead a rent the place so I don't lose money every month on HOA dues.

My last ace-in-the-hole is the lawsuit Im claiming against RTD (bus company) because I was struck down riding a bike in the bike lane. I wasn't injured too bad, though I had knee surgery and have bone chips floating in my left elbow, scaring on my left hand and elbow. Tailbone may or may not be provable as getting worse from before. Then there's the emotional damages. At least I have an excellent attorney. He's like a little hornet, you get him out there and he's a real stinger!!!

My vote is for South Toledo. We had a block watch meeting and had the Toledo Gang task force there. They told us there are not gangs in our area. Just skate boarders. 43614

There are gangs all over this city. I have live in Toledo all my life and
have watched many parts of this city deteriate. I grew up in West Toledo, and
currently live in west Toledo. Sure there is crime everywhere, However
There are Great neighbors and the School system if that is a concern is rated
EXCELLENT. I moved out of the Toledo public school system because
of all the problems with that neighborhood and the school system.

Just something to think about.

Move to one of the suburbs. Toledo is not all its cracked up to be and alot of the city workers, not police and firemen, are quite lazy and WON'T go out of their way to help you as I found out recently. There's only a few miles of neighborhoods that don't have criminal ativity on a regular basis. I had relatives that got harrased by neighborhood thugs and the police "couldn't" do anything about it and then thier house mysteriously caught fire, that's when they decided to move out of Toledo permanatly.

That sucks----sounds like stuff Ive heard on TV. I don't want to live around thugs....Ive had my share of that in Denver----drugs, gangs, racism, all that crap.

Not that I think I can get a completely away, but a predominantly caucasian middle-class neighborhood would be better than an "inner-city" neighborhood. You get the drift.

Can you list some of the suburbs please? Maybe give me a list of their zip codes if you know how to find them? I'd appreciate that.

43615 is pretty decent if your deadset on moving into the city. Anywhere around Sylvania, Holland/Springfield Township, Maumee is pretty quiet and gang free, Perrysburg seems really nice too, Rossford I'm not too sure though. South Toledo, North Toledo, East Toledo and Old West End you want to stay away from though. The relatives I spoke of in my previous post lived in the 43609 zipcode, you definitely don't want to move to that zipcode. Check the www.toledoblade.com website for a crime report, they do a weekly; at least they used too, map of where crimes have taken place.
