What a beautiful place! Once you turn off of Harpers Ferry Road onto the prpoerty, you're in for a treat! The approach is a long winding, paved road tha tis surrounded by vines and eventually leads you through a grand, welcoming wrought iron gate. Once inside, the tasting room was cozy and had a nice fireplace made of stone. The setting has a very Tuscan feel with complete rolling hills, lavender lined, stucco building and scenic mountain vistas.
The grounds seemed very well kept and there is a beautiful hilly terrace to enjoy picnics and a patio where you can enjoy your wine and other foods purchased here. They sell cheeses, pate, salami, olives, bread etc..typical fare for a winery. There was a local musician playing on their patio during my visit which was a nice touch.
I was welcomed upon entering the tasting room and decided to taste all of the wines that are on the tasting sheet (13 in all). It was a value at only $10 including tax and I was at their bar for around 30 minutes. It takes quite a while to sip through all those wines. The tasting started with dry whites and a Rose', then to the reds and finishing with the sweeter white wines. I enjoyed all of the wines and since I tend to prefer dryer whites & reds, my favorites were the 2008 Viognier (Dry, crisp with vibrant fruit), the Dry Syrah Rose' (A French style Rose' made with 100% Syrah - NOT a blush), 2005 Lafayette - Cabernet Franc, 02 Reserve Merlot, 2006 Meritage, and the 2005 Nebbiolo. I have to say that the dessert wines were awesome and the Soleil reminded me of Sauternes - a steal at $26/bottle. I also tasted a private label wine for their club - a Petite Verdot and it was lovely. It had dark fruit qualities with intense aroma and flavors.
Breaux Vineyards is owned and operated by 2 generations of the Breaux family. I really like the family aspect and appreciated the fact that this was not a commercial establishment. The wine prices were reasonable and started at $12 and went up to $48. The average cost was around $20. The wine tasting assistants were knowledgeable and friendly and coupled with quality and diversity of the wine and the beauty of the property, I would recommend this winery to anyone.
Breaux is close to several other wineries so even though it's off the beaten path, once you get there you're withing minutes of around 10 other wineries. I'll be going back!
