Both of my children attend St. Francis School. At this point we have almost fourteen years of experince here. Like any school, it has its strengths and weaknesses. I am very pleased with the quality of the academics and the care and dedication of the administration and the faculty. Based on grades, standardized test scores, High School entrance exams, etc. my children are thriving in this environment. According to at least one administrator at Holy Cross High School in Waterbury - "St. Francis does a great job preparing students for high school." The sports programs at St. Francis are limited but, given the other sports programs that are available in Naugatuck, school sports are not a necessity. The school is very much a catholic school - focusing on religious education in addition to academics. Children are taught good moral principles and are expected to treat each other with respect and kindness. When a child is having difficulties (academically or socially) the faculty contacts parents and works with them (when necessary) to solve the problem.
Parents are encouraged to get involved with school activities. The Home School Association (similar to a PTA at public schools) is very active and is focused on fostering a close relationship between the parents and teachers of the school.
St. Francis can be a small place (the graduating class in 2008 will have about 12 students) but the small community is very strong and people watch out for each other and their kids. So, if someone sees your kid doing something wrong, you'll hear about it. Which is, at least for me, a great thing. The building is over 100 years old (so it has alot of character and a some blemishes). In my opinion, a pretty and brand new building aren't necessary to make a school great. Great teachers, involved parents, and dedication to learning. These are the things that St. Francis has going for it.
