Our West Highland terrier, Nora, was 14 yrs old and had a congested heart condition and one evening recently clearly had respiratory problems. I took her to Animal Emergency Clinic on University Avenue around 10 pm. It was a long wait, but it was an emergency visit and I expected the wait. The staff, however, quickly did what they could afte a quick examination to make the dog more comfortable until the vet had the time to examine her. When I met with the vet, she explained the X-Rays in detail showing the enlarged heart pressing against the lungs, and the cancer lesions, and gave me all the treatment options but candidly and tactfully recommended euthanising Nora. I appreciated the detailed diagnosis and presentation of all the options, as well as her own recommendation. I took her advice, not unexpected, and was impressed how sensitively they handled everything. Sure, the visit took two hours and I didn't leave until midnight, but this is an emergency clinic, the staff were busy with other pet consultations, I had no scheduled appointment, and was grateful that the clinic was open and available for consultation. When I met with the vet, she was fully informed about Nora's condition and gave me all the time I wanted to discuss her diagnosis and recommended treatment options. Afterwards, the staff followed up the visit with a card regarding Nora - a nice touch that is appreciated by any pet owner who has lost a beloved pet. I've used the clinic once before with another emergency surgery and the clinic handled everything professionally, and I would recommend the clinic without reservation. Keep in mind: this is an emergency clinic only, so don't expect drive-thru treatment - just be glad they are there and available to help your pet in a time of need.
