I had adopted two (sister) cats from a humane society 17 years ago. They have enriched my life so much.
In response to "youall", it is difficult for any humane shelter to medically take care of all their animals, it is just way too expensive. The money we pay for the adoption usually goes toward a spay/neuter coupon. Any time I have, or known others, to adopt an animal from a humane shelter, the first trip has always been to the vet. Fleas at any shelter is not uncommon, and will be cured with a simple bath of dish detergent. Yes, worms need medication, but also treatable fairly inexpensive. As far as shots, I would get them first anyways. I believe the humane shelters provide a necessary service to a community, and shouldn't be criticized because lack of funding inhibits them from providing all medical services that are available at our local vets.
