I had the pleasure and opportunity to meet Major Spooner, whom I've heard a lot about. His knowledge of MC History is the best I've ever known.
He helped me with the Boxer Rebellion Marines, such as Pvt. France Silva, of the USS Newark and MoH recipient. Silva is buried in California near my home. Major Spooner knew exactly who was who in this period and also knew who Ray Jacobs was at Iwo Jima (1st flag raising).
Major Spooner is assisting me in finding a photo of Pvt. Silva as he is the subject of a book I hope to write about.
The food was great and the experience of just being there was well worth the travel. The Commandant General of the British Royal Marines was there that day with a detachment of personnel who were opening a new chapter of the Royal Marines.
Major Spooner - thank you very much!
