The fort was used to train soldiers and hold German prisoners during the War. The complete conversion of the fort into a cemetery only happened in 1981. Today, it encompasses an area of 770.4 acres (311.8 hectare) and has more than 30,000 interments. The entrance to the cemetery is lined with 152 American flags and a main flagpole as well as 50 additional flags arranged in a semicircle representing all 50 states.
