Legend has it, that during the period November 1966 to December 1967, several locals had seen a man-sized bird creature in Point Pleasant. News about these weird sightings were published in local newspapers, but the Mothman became popular by the book 'The Mothman Prophesies' along with a movie with the same name. In 2002, the first Annual Mothman festival was organized and a 12 feet (3.6 meters) statue of the creature was created by artist and sculptor Bob Roach, only to be unveiled in 2003. Since then, every year, a week-long festival is held on the third week of September.
